Supporting Mid-Wales students with applying to medical school

To address a shortage in applications from rural areas in Wales, it is important to offer secondary school and university students studying in Mid-Wales the opportunity to learn more about a career in medicine .

Dr Sue Fish offers support to students considering applying to medical schools. She has recorded a Panopto video about medical studies:

Contact cmestaff@aber.ac.uk if you are interested in organizing an online or a live talk with Dr Fish and some medical students. It is followed by a Q&A session to answer any question you or your students might have about medical studies.

Dr Fish and the medical students can also offer one to one support on demand, online or in person, to students who express an interest in medical studies.

Medical Students

All the GP practices are approved for training medical students with Cardiff Medical School and take students as part of the Community and Rural Education (CARER) Programme. This is a new scheme where year 3 medical students are based in a GP practice for the entire year, work alongside the primary care team and have 1:1 supervision from a GP tutor. They have teaching as a group on one day a the week supervised by Dr Sue Fish Clinical Senior Lecturer at Cardiff Medical School.

A number of the practices also take students from Swansea Medical School on their Remote and Rural Health in Medical Education Track. Cambrian Primary Care is also working closely with the medical school to develop a Primary Care Academy for training doctors and nurses and other health care professionals in the Aberystwyth area.

GP Vocational Training

The Aberystwyth GP vocational training scheme is run in association with the Wales Deanery. GP trainees are eligible for the financial incentive scheme which has been introduced by the Welsh Government.
